Uzbekistan
heart of the silk road

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is the heart of Central Asia, especially the tourist center, with by far the most visitors in the region. What attracts all those visitors is clear: the cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva, pearls from the past and thoroughly and beautifully restored.

Other favourites in Uzbekistan include the Fergana Valley in the east, a conservative but hospitable part of the country with colorful bazaars, the city of Termez at the border with Afghanistan with influences of Buddhism, as well as the area around the town of Nukus in the west with a surprising art gallery and opportunities for adventure towards the drying Aral Sea.

Also, it should be mentioned that Uzbeks, a hardworking people, excel in various forms of handicrafts such as woodcarving, ceramics, embroidery and silk processing. A visit to one or more workshops is certainly possible and popular.
Programs usually begin in the metropolis Tashkent, which can still show an interesting mix of influences throughout the centuries.

Travelling in Uzbekistan is safe and the food is varied and excellent. Certainly compared with the cuisine in neighboring Kyrgystan and Kazakhstan (real carnivores) there is more choice of vegetables and salads, and fruit (mostly from the Fergana valley ) is excellent.

To visit Uzbekistan you need to have a visa, and to obtain the visa, you must have an invitation letter ( LOI). The LOI we will arrange for you when you book a program, the visa you can obtain upon arrival in Uzbekistan, or at the Uzbek embassy in case your country of residence holds one.

If you want to taste what Central Asia has to offer in a period of 10-14 days, a combined visit to Kyrgystan is recommended; the history and beautiful ancient cities of Uzbekistan together with the stunning scenery and interesting culture of the nomadic Kyrgyz.

Finally, Uzbekistan has its economy and currency is not yet liberalized, which means that ATMs and CC are of limited use. You should take USD cash with you during a visit.
